Material Selection Guide for Plastic Extrusions
ABS
|
Economical plastic used in consumer electronics exhibits rigidity, hardness and chemical resistance. |
| ACRYLIC |
Clear high clarity rigid plastic used in retail displays, lighting lenses and window glazing applications. Known as Plexiglas. Comes in all colors. |
| NYLON |
High tensile strength, good impact and abrasion resistance. Low coefficient of friction, high temperature and chemical resistance. Easily machined. |
| POLYCARBONATE |
Clear, high clarity, and excellent impact resistance. Maximum rigidity with fairly high temperature use. Used in bullet proof window applications. |
| POLYETHYLENE |
Low Density - Low cost plastic for high impact, low tensile strength, low hardness and good in moisture. Slick and waxy to the touch. Specific gravity under 1.
High Density - Harder and stiffer than low density. High temperature and chemical resistance. good for bearing surfaces. |
| PVC |
Rigid to flexible plastic with excellent weather and UV resistance. Non-flammable and high corrosion resistance. FDA grade available. |
| STYRENE |
Good clarity strength and stiffness. Inexpensive and somewhat brittle. Used in displays and signage and comes in all colors. |
| TPR |
Thermoplastic alternative to rubber. Various durometers from soft to hard, good chemical resistance. |
| URETHANE |
Soft to hard grades, good tensile and tear strength with excellent impact resistance. Used in auto bumpers and trim. |

These materials are some of the many plastic extrusion resins.
