Design Aids for Profile Plastic Extrusion
| APPLICATION |
Any continuous profile such as a tube or channel can be an extruded plastic. Details such as holes, notches or slots must be done as a secondary operation. |
| PART DESIGN |
Avoid multiple holes or enclosures within the Plastic Profile Extrusion as they are expensive to tool and produce. Be generous with radii in corners. Eliminate as much mass as possible which adds to material cost and contributes to uneven walls. Uniform walls where possible are key. |
WALL
THICKNESS |
The ideal wall for optimum production and cost efficiency is .030 - .080. Walls as thick as thick .500 can be extruded but the process is dramatically slowed, resulting in increased labor and material costs. Where strength is critical, opt for stiffer materials which will allow for thinner walls. |
| TOLERANCES |
The more generous the tolerances the faster the profile can run. This means cost savings for the customer. Typically .020 is considered a reasonable tolerance for line speed. Although tighter tolerances can be held, avoid over engineering your profiles, if not necessary. |
| MATERIALS |
Some materials process easier and can run faster than others. Some materials require more sophisticated dies and after forming equipment. Consult us with material selection for your plastic extrusions. |
